Kirby is my first Corgi, and after 20 years of German
Shepherds at that point, I thought I had just
"downsized" to a "little" dog......boy, was I wrong! What
a new adventure this was to be! Kirby, with his quiet
ways and sweet personality, changed me forever. I
committed myself to DO something with my dogs, so
set myself the goal of doing agility with Kirby. He was
a great "learning dog" for someone as uncoordinated
as this handler, but even though he tolerated me and
stuck with me 2/3 of the way through the Open level of
agility, I finally realized that my short-legged friend was
NOT the canine athlete I'd imagined, and that SPEED
really WAS part of the sport of agility.....so we went on
to other things. Kirby was perfectly suited to Therapy
Dog work, so we got his CGC and TDI certification.
And he loves tricks.....which got us a spot on WGN-TV
showing off his talent at playing the piano! He even
"sang" along and then took a bow!
Kirby was never a show dog. He turned out to be too small for a male
in the ring of the time, so I acquired him as a pet at one year of age
from Patti Bittles ("Pot O'Gold"). He is a gorgeous specimen of the
breed, so when he became of Veteran age and eligible to show in the
Veteran classes at the Lakeshore Specialty, there was no better
showman - like he'd been a show dog all of his life - and no dry eyes
when at the 2007 Lakeshore Specialty, Kirby was awarded Best
Veteran Dog in Sweepstakes by judge Willys Treanor, and Veteran Dog
in regular classes by British judge Pat Bonner.....at 10 years of age!
Kirby now lives in Chicago with Laura Ell and David Knickerbocker, and
his very own "human puppy", Axl, along with Corgi Edgar and a bunny
whose name also just happened to be Kirby. Laura and David were
dog-sitting Kirby while we were on vacation, and they so fell in love with
him, and he so delighted in being in their home, that I could not deny
that bond. No dog could be more "loved beyond all reason" than Kirby.
